TNMU purchased an apparatus for electroconvulsive therapy
A significant event took place in the psychiatry of Ternopil: a modern new generation device produced by TYMOTRON company (USA) for electroconvulsive therapy was purchased for the treatment of patients with mental health problems. This was made possible with the assistance of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University Rector, Professor Mykhaylo Korda. The Academic Council of TNMU unanimously supported the decision to purchase this device for the needs of the Department of Psychiatry, Narcology and Medical Psychology, which is located in Ternopil Regional Clinical Psychoneurological Hospital.
On September 27, the first ECT session was conducted for a patient resistant to psychopharmacotherapy and suffering from chronic psychiatric disorder. The presentation of the device was held with the participation of the Vice-rector for Science, Education and Clinical Affairs, Professor Stepan Zaporozhan, General Director of the Hospital, Honored Doctor of Ukraine, Volodymyr Shkrobot, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Narcology and Medical Psychology, Professor Olena Wenher and teaching and clinical staff.
Training for the personnel was carried out by the colleagues from Khmelnytsky regional psychiatric hospital, Head of resuscitation department Naiduk I. M. and Head of the psychiatric department Hatin A. Yu.
The method of electroconvulsive therapy is the “golden standard” for overcoming resistance to pharmacotherapy in many psychiatric disorders, as well as the method of choice for resistant depression with persistent suicidal tendencies, catatonic-oneroid, febrile and resistant forms of schizophrenia, persistent hebefrenic arousal, obsessive-compulsive disorder, etc.
The use of this device will help to improve the quality of educational work with students and interns, increase their motivation to study, awareness of the importance of knowledge and ability to apply them in practice, to successfully master the future profession, to develop clinical thinking, as well as enable patients to receive complete psychiatric care and improve the quality of life.
A special role will be given to the use of the device in the planned research work of the department to study the effectiveness of this method in the treatment of mental disorders, the development of treatment regimens using electroconvulsive therapy, especially in case of resistance to psychotropic drugs, will improve the protocols of mental disorders treatment and promote their application for practical use.
