Henry Marsh, a Famous Neurosurgeon Delivered an Online Lecture to the TNMU Students

His books are very sincere and honest, filled with stories regarding his own practice. He often reflects the work of doctors and the problems they face in professional activities. Medical students are looking forward his lectures excitedly. This all is about Professor Henry Marsh, the founder and senior neurosurgeon of the International Centre for Neurosurgery, a member of the Royal College of Neurosurgeons in London and the Association of Neurosurgeons of Great Britain.

On March 1, 2021, he delivered an online lecture “On Death and Extinction”, which was broadcasted on the official Yotube channel of Ternopil National Medical University. It should be noted that Henry Marsh is sharing his experience with TNMU students for the second time. For the first time he gave a lecture at our university on September 21, 2016 on “What Does It Take to Be a Good Doctor”. At that time he was invited by the student body of Ternopil Medical University. Henry Marsh said that he remembered the previous meeting very well and it had been a very enjoyable day.

This time Henry Marsh spoke about different views on death of religion and his practice as comprehensibly as possible for students of all courses, shared with students his experience in communicating with palliative patients. He also stressed the importance of tolerance in medical practice. He explained in detail why people are afraid of death, how to talk about death with patients, how to inform the patient about a fatal diagnosis. Such an open conversation is very important, because every doctor faces it during his professional activity.

At the end of his speech, the neurosurgeon answered the questions that students provided in the chat of the Yotube channel of TNMU.

The online meeting was organized by the team of the TNMU Outlook Student Vlog, in particular Yulia Bandrivska, Ivan Lutsyk, Andriy Chaika, Marta Struk, Maria Maryniuk, Denis Korostil, Maria Semerez.

“To my mind, the lecture was really interesting and important for every listener. After all, our event covered a special topic for humanity and medicine – death. Everyone faces this phenomenon sooner or later, especially doctors. I hope that our conversation will be useful for doctors, nurses, current students in helping patients in the future.

I would like to thank the lecturer, Henry Marsh, as well as the administration of our university for their support, the Outlook TNMU team, Andriy Myzak, and everyone who facilitated us in arranging this event,” said Ivan Lutsyk.

The registration form, published in advance on the TNMU official website and the student vlog in social networks, was filled out by 408 people. The lecture was watched live by 300 people, at the moment the video of the lecture on Youtube was watched by 2305 people.

The student body of TNMU received many thanks from the students from other cities, who had the opportunity to gain personal and professional experience of Henry Marsh. Similar online lectures with famous doctors will be held on a regular basis.

At the end of the lecture, the rector of TNMU, Professor Mykhaylo Korda, invited Henry Marsh to visit our university again and communicate live with students.
