Senior Lecturer of TNMU Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology Completed Internship at the Institute of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases (Toulouse, France)

On May 1, 2022 – October 31, 2023, senior lecturer of the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology, Halyna Loi completed an internship at the Institute of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases (I2MC) as a postdoctoral fellow in B. Garmy-Susini/A-C. Prats research team on “Molecular regulations of lymphangiogenic factors in vascular diseases”.

The Institute of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases (I2MC) is a division of the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) and operates at the Rangueil University Hospital.

Toulouse Rangueil University Hospital.

I2MC consists of 11 research teams and 7 technology platforms, in which about 280 people are involved. Scientists and clinicians are working to study metabolic risk factors (obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia) and their cardiovascular complications (vascular disease, thrombosis, atherosclerosis, heart and kidney failure).

At the Institute of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows meet once a month in the format of coffee time, where there is an opportunity to exchange work experience in the laboratory and discuss current problems of modern science.

Halyna Loi carried out research within the framework of 2 projects: “PRL (PTP4as) Phosphatases in Angiogenesis, Lymphangiogenesis and Tumor Development” and “Influence of antidiabetic drugs on the functioning of the lymphatic system”.

During the internship, Halyna Loi gained experience working with cell cultures (Human dermal lymphatic endothelial cells), and also performed in vivo experiments, in particular, modeled secondary lymphedema and tumors (B16 melanoma), performed lymphography in mice. Our scholar conducted a wide range of laboratory studies (fluorescent histology and microscopy, photocolorimetry, flow cytometry (FACS), RNA sequencing, digital droplet PCR, isolated lymphoid cells from mouse tissues using Sorter BD Influx, etc.). In addition, she was trained in working with a confocal microscope and a Seahorse analyzer.

Research results were presented:

  • at the I2MC internal seminar (July 4, 2023)
  • at the scientific and practical conference Retraite Scientifique de l’I2MC (June 5-6, 2023)
  • at the 10th Congress of the French Association of Angiogenesis (Bordeaux, October 11-13, 2023), where Halyna Loi’s poster presentation received the first prize.

Two articles are being prepared for publication in journals indexed in Scopus scientometric databases.

The scientist would like to express her deepest appreciation to the administration of Ternopil National Medical University for their assistance in organizing the internship abroad, as well as to the supervisors Dr. Barbara Garmy-Susini and Dr. Anne-Catherine Prats and all members of the “Molecular regulations of lymphangiogenic factors in vascular diseases” team for invaluable help and reliable friendship.

Infinite gratitude is sent to French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) for financial support, and to the people of France for their faith in Ukraine.
