Training “Clinical Scenarios and Their Assessment. Preparation for OSCE” in Lviv

On March 4-5, 2025, the second training session, “Clinical Scenarios and Their Assessment. Preparation for OSCE,” took place in Lviv. The event was organized within the framework of the Ukrainian-Swiss project “Development of Medical Education in Ukraine” and was attended by faculty members from I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University.

TNMU was represented by:

Nadiia Makarchuk, Assistant Professor of the Department of Medical Rehabilitation.

Svitlana Nykytiuk, Professor of the Department of Pediatric Diseases and Pediatric Surgery.

Larysa Martyniuk, Associate Professor of the Department of Emergency Medical Care.

Olha Kostiv, Associate Professor of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care.

Olena Oleksiak, Assistant Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology No.1.

The main goal of the training was to enhance the skills of medical educators in developing, analyzing, and assessing clinical scenarios, as well as improving evaluation methods for students’ clinical and communication competencies. This, in turn, contributes to higher quality OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) implementation in Ukrainian medical universities.

Expert Trainer

The training was conducted by Dmytro Konkov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, and Secretary of the Ukrainian Association of Medical Educational Simulation Technologies. He is also a co-author of educational manuals and methodological guidelines, including:

“Organization and Conducting of OSCE”

“Establishing a Simulation Center: Principles and Guidelines”

Training Program

Day 1 – Developing Clinical Scenarios

Participants:
✔ Learned the principles of OSCE clinical station design.
✔ Created their examination scenarios.
✔ Studied strategies for implementation.
✔ Received expert feedback on their materials.

Through interactive presentations and practical exercises, key aspects of effective OSCE station organization were explored, helping participants structure their knowledge and acquire new competencies.

Day 2 – Assessment and Improvement

Participants:
✔ Analyzed the developed clinical scenarios.
✔ Created a system for assessing clinical and communication skills.
✔ Refined their scenarios considering real-world OSCE challenges.
✔ Engaged in a debriefing discussion to address problematic issues and formulate recommendations for improving OSCE processes at their universities.

Impact and Future Implementation

The training provided medical educators with valuable tools and methodologies that can be adapted to their institutions. This contributes to standardizing OSCE preparation and implementation across Ukraine, ensuring more objective student assessments.

By integrating the acquired recommendations, universities can enhance student preparation for OSCE, ultimately improving the competency of future medical professionals.
