The history of Postgraduate Education Faculty
The history of Postgraduate Education Faculty of SHEI “ I.Ya.Horbachevsky State Medical University of MOH of Ukraine started on February 26, 1979 when the order of MOH of Ukrainian SSR on the foundation of Doctors’ Advanced Training Faculty on the basis of Ternopil Medical Institute was issued.
Associate Professors L.M.Khoromskyi, H.T.Borsuk and PhD in Medical Sciences Ya.D.Halytskyi are considered to be the founders of the Faculty. Their titanic efforts contributed greatly to the development of postgraduate education in Ternopil region. Many postgraduate courses’ learners from different parts of the former Soviet Union were admitted to study there.
Many scientists, professors, associate professors and talented doctors of our region have contributed to the foundation and development of Doctors’ Advanced Training Faculty and later on the Faculty of Postgraduate Education for its 37-year history.
New staffs of the Departments started their work on August 27, 1979. Doctor of Med.Sc. M.B.Rozumenko headed the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Assoc.Prof. Ye.F.Buzko headed the Department of Pediatrics, the Department of Therapy was headed by Doctor of Med.Sc. S.H.Vainshtein, the Department of Surgery was headed by Prof. A.H.Hadzhiiev. They came from various cities of the former Soviet Union.
Since the time of Faculty foundation many deans have run it and many chairmen of departments have been appointed.

In 1988 the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was headed by PhD in Med.Sc., Assoc.Prof. M.I.Zhyliaiev, then Assoc.Prof. N.M. Oliynyk was at the head of the Department. Now the Department is headed by Prof. A.V.Boichuk.
In February 1985 the Department of Pediatrics was headed by Doctor of Med.Sc. L.M. Slobodian, then Assoc.Prof. V.F.Loboda was at the head of the Department. Since 2001 till now the Department is headed by Doctor of Med.Sc., Prof. N.V.Banadyha.
In August 1988 the Department of Therapy was headed by Assoc.Prof. Ye.M.Starodub, and in 2010 it was headed by Doctor of Med.Sc. M.V.Hrebenyk.
The Department of Surgery was headed by Doctor of Med.Sc.V.H.Mykuliak in 1980, then in 1985 it was headed by Assoc.Prof. L.M.Khoromskyi. Since 1992 till now the Department is headed by Prof. I.Ya. Dziubanovskyi.
The Course of Medical Statistics was organized at the Faculty in February 1984. It was headed by Prof.H.H.Holiachenko. Assoc.Prof.H.H.Konopelko, assistants V.B.Kozak, L.M.Romaniuk, Z.Ye.Babiak contributed greatly to the establishment and development of the Faculty.
The Department of Cardiology was established in January 1987. Two Cardiological Departments of Ternopil Regional Clinical Hospital became its basis. The Department was headed by Doctor of Med.Sc. B.I.Rudyk.
Time has made its new updating. New medical innovations, technologies, and modern equipment have been implemented. On December 1, 1995 the Department of Diagnostics and Medical Informatics was established on the basis of Rivne Regional Medical and Diagnostic Center. The Department was headed by the Chief physician of the center V.M.Polishchuk. Since 1999 the Department is headed by the Chief physician of Rivne RCMDC Assoc.Prof. I.V.Shumlianskyi.
In March 1998, a Department of Emergency Medicine was founded on the basis of the Rivne Regional Hospital and it was headed by an experienced organizer and specialist in neurology, Honoured Doctor of Ukraine Ya. O. Maslii. Department’s basis was a 700-bed institution and it included laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery centres.
Taking into account the needs of medicine in various specialists who would have good knowledge of rehabilitation methods of patients, the Medical Rehabilitation Course began to function on the basis of the “Medobory” sanatorium (near the city of Ternopil) in January 1999. It was headed by the Сhief Doctor of the sanatorium V. I. Martyniuk. In November 2001, the Medical Rehabilitation Course merged with the newly founded Department of Physiotherapy, Medical Rehabilitation and Balneology, which was headed by Doctor of Med. Sc., Prof. I. R. Mysula.
Close cooperation of the faculty with practical health care institutions allows to respond quickly to their needs. This was a prerequisite for the foundation of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopaedics with Combustiology of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education in September 2003 and it was headed by Doctor of Med. Sc. O. V. Rolik. Famous Scientist, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, Prof. V. V. Bihuniak was headed by a Course of Combustiology. Since September 2004, the head of the department was Prof. Yedynak.
In 2007 the faculty began training pharmacists-interns in the specialty “General Pharmacy and Clinical Pharmacy”. The Course of Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Technologies and Surgical Disciplines was initiated. In 2011 the course was reformed into the Department of Endoscopy with Minimally Invasive Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Faculty of Postgraduate Education.
The faculty has been accepting dentists for internship training since 2009.
In 2013 the Faculty of Postgraduate Education was reorganized into the Academic and Research Institute of Postgraduate Education, which was represented by the following departments: Surgery of the Academic and Research Institute of Postgraduate Education, Therapy and Family Medicine of the Academic and Research Institute of Postgraduate Education, Paediatrics of the Academic and Research Institute of Postgraduate Education, Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Academic and Research Institute of Postgraduate Education, Dentistry of the Academic and Research Institute of Postgraduate Education and Pharmacy of the Academic and Research Institute of Postgraduate Education. The work of the institute was provided by 9 Doctors of Medical Sciences, 29 Associate Professors and 7 PhD in Medical Sciences.
In 2020 another reorganization of the Academic and Research Institute of Postgraduate Education into the Faculty of Postgraduate Education was carried out.
More than 42 000 and 9 500 interns were trained and retrained. 183 doctors were trained in the specialty “General Practice – Family Medicine”, and more than 400 family doctors had pre-certification training at the faculty. “Regulations on the training in the cycles of specialization of family paediatricians and general practitioners in the specialty “General practice – Family Medicine” in the full-time and part-time form of education” was developed and approved by the Academic Council of the university. A curricula for the secondary specialization of general practitioners and paediatricians in the specialty “General Practice – Family Medicine” in a 6-month full-time and part-time form of education has been implemented.
Internship training on 15 specialties and specialization for doctors on 5 specialties: “General Practice – Family Medicine”, “Emergency Medicine”, “Organization and Management of Health Care”, “Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics”, “Organization of Pharmacy Management” are carried out at the Faculty of Postgraduate Education. Pre-certification cycles, which cover 19 specialties; 23 cycles of thematic improvement are conducted on 15 areas of activity
The positions of director of the institute in different years were headed by:
2013–2014 – Doctor of Med. Sc., Prof. M. V. Hrebenyk; since 2014 – PhD in Med. Sc., Assoc. Prof. R.V. Svystun.
